Martha Carillo is an LA based artist, designer, actress, event producer and mother to FOUR ninos! In 2009 she founded the LA based Heart On Productions, which was originally conceived as a monthly event showcasing local female DJs and visual artists. Heart On grew to include live bands, vendors, spoken word artists and various other entertainers. Heart On has created a community that nurtures the imaginations of its participants and audience. Its progression has helped many artists develop and flourish through support and genuine care. We are honored to interview Martha Carillo on this Mothers Day!

BFN: At what point growing up did you realize that you wanted to pursue the life of an artist? How did you get started?

Martha: As a child, art was my only escape from reality. Now as an adult I see it as my necessary therapy. I’ve been in love with art as far back as I can remember. Heart On was sprouted from that lOVE & has grown with the support of other like-minded artists & art Lovers. Four years Ago, I found myself as far away from art As I’ve ever allowed myself to be. I was working a full-time office job in order to support my 2 young daughters. In conversation with a friend, I shared that I wanted to get out of my rut & host an Art Show/ Dance Party. In that same conversation, I was offered a night at a Bar/Club in LA where I could make that happen. I decided to focus on local community art & music, we have monthly events with themes, costumes & unique performances. We’ve pushed & blurred boundaries, and always have a great time.

BFN: Is there an arts “scene” in North East LA? If so, how would you describe it? What are people doing? Where is it going? How are they connecting and collabing?

Martha: As an L.A. native from Boyle Heights, I find that the art scene is spilling & flowing on to our communities & neighborhoods brighter than ever. There seems to be an awakening, almost like an unnoticed/violent thirst that has been uncovered. Young artists are learning about their culture & developing a contemporary style that translates well to many generations at once. More & more “Art Walks” are born & celebrated in even the smallest communities of L.A. & the valleys. This celebration of life & art are the reason I continue to work as hard as I have. To ensure that our children can continue to have the option of Artistic Expression. My therapy & escape from reality has become my dream come true.

Matha: Heart On will celebrate its 4 year Anniversary this year along with release of our first printed collaboration of art & photography. The Ladies of HEART ON calendar features women of Heart On who are artists, DJ’s, musicians, dancers, & producers as models in theme & costume in 12 art installations designed by Heart On Artists & Photographed by Alex The Brown. You will be able to get a very limited (only 50 copies) monthly Art/Music & Poetry Zine (self-Published/handmade magazine) that we debuted at The 2nd Annual Zine Fest in L.A.
